Chartres generally is called as "the Capital of Light and Perfume”. 96 km southwest of Paris in central France is built on the left banks of the Eure River. The main attraction of the Chartres is the Cathedral which is the shining amour in Chartres. The Cathedral is a masterpiece of highest order and largest in France, a gothic architecture built in 1194-1225. The Notre-Dame de Chartres (the Cathedral of Our Lady of Chartres), it has supremely crafted harmonious glasses of high quality; you will be astonished to see the beauty which was built in the middle ages. The present church, the sixth on the site, was begun immediately after the fifth church burned in 1194. Every one worked all day and night and helped rebuild the church, with labor or with lavish benefactions.

The Chartres Cathedral is famous for the 13th century, large stained glass windows and rated as the finest collection of medieval stained glasses in the world. Despite modernization when glass windows were removed but 152 of them survived. The windows are distinct because of the vivid blue colour, a representation of the Madonna and Child known as the Blue Virgin Window, a traditional iconography know as the Seat of Wisdom. The Jesse Tree window is another famous window at Chartres Though original gothic architecture, but was partly inspired by the Abbé Suger's Abbey of Saint-Denis in Paris; The minutely proportioned Latin-cross plan includes a wide (16 m/52 ft) nave flanked by single 8-m (26-ft) aisles, a high (36 m/118 ft) vault, spacious (46 m/150 ft) transepts with side aisles, and an apsidal choir with double aisles and five radial chapels.

With all this Chartres Cathedral deserves to be in the UNESCO’s world heritage list because of the gothic Architectural masterpiece.
